Takes about a minute. No obligation.

Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Heavy rain falls past the roofline and gutter of a red brick house, with wind-blown leafy trees against a pale grey sky behind it.

Sizing a mini-split here starts with what the system will actually run against, and the weather record is part of that calculation. 153 severe weather events were recorded in Rockbridge County, Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition in this area, not an occasional disruption, and a contractor who ignores it will undersize the equipment or skip protections the install genuinely needs. Refrigerant line placement, mounting height, and outdoor unit siting all shift when the climate puts sustained load on the system year after year.

Ductwork is not a factor with a mini-split, but the electrical panel is. Half the homes in Rockbridge County, Virginia were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Wiring installed to serve the loads of that period was sized for what those loads were, and a licensed contractor quoting a mini-split installation will open the panel to find out whether the existing service can carry the new unit before anything else gets priced. If it cannot, the panel upgrade becomes part of the job. That is a different scope than most homeowners walk in expecting.

What a Mini-split Installation Puts in Your Home

Cutaway isometric illustration of a small building interior showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets running down to a single outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room you want conditioned, delivering air directly to that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the coil that sheds heat to the outside air.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture from the indoor handler to the outside. A disconnect box is mounted near the outdoor unit to give the contractor a safe shutoff point.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly where each piece goes in your house based on its construction and your needs.
